The land in the chapter area is colorful with indigenous plant life. There are sand dunes, red mesas with valleys, hills and washes. The community part of the chapter area was settled in the late 1890's. Settlers were attracted by the rich basin suitable for farming. In 1930, a trading post and a day school were built.
The Tolani Lake Chapter conducts monthly meetings to keep residents informed; residents have a forum to express their opinions to their Navajo Nation Council Delegate or to decide on matters concerning their chapter.
Members of District 5 have an annual cattle sale. Some chapter livestock raisers belong to a local cattlemen's association. Due to lack of employment in the chapter area, most people work in Leupp, Flagstaff, and Winslow area. Before the chapter house was built, the community people met by the trading post outdoors, and sometimes under trees. An old BIA school was the center of many activities, before it was converted for pre-school use.
